My family's crazy...

...but I love them!

I am Kirby the Almighty! You are now under my trance and and will do what I say! Look into my eyes...

Now child, you will listen to me AND let my play with your toys! Muhahahah

What? You have a problem with my control?

Adjusting to Change

Culture shock has worn off, the stuck up people from my street are actually really nice and I feel like we're settling in a litte more. This is probaby mostly due to most of the stuff that we "need" is crammed into our little/big bedroom that the three of us get to share. :)

Clark has been doing wonderfully! He's adapted to the change with ease despite growing some teeth. We had a few fussy days and my parents laughed at me when I told them that we had a fussy baby.

Clint and Jack hanging in the bare living room.

Clark enjoying some time with his uncle Jack.

Clark getting ready for the trip!

The cats getting ready for the road.

Clark has to get use to not sleeping in his crib so we put his crib mattress between the two blow up mattresses Clint and I had. Here are some pictures of him on the floor and in the crib. He's done a faboulous job of geting use to sleeping in different places.

Clark getting welcomed by his Mimi. Notice how the dog doesn't want to share his lap and is forcing my mom to hold both Kurby and Clark on her lap. :)

Although we really miss our friends, it's nice to be here and with our family. It feels good to be back!

Ready or Not, Welcome Back to California

Moving back to California has been something I wasn't wanting to do when we first moved away, but as the years went by and especially after Clark joined our family, I am very happy that we are back. Over the last couple of days I've been stressing about the adjustments I will be making. Going from having basically 2 jobs, (teacher and mommy) well 3 if you count being a wife :) to no longer having a boss. Many parts of not having a boss is WONDERFUL and I certainly won't miss it.

Also the adjustments of going to a new church building and meeting new friends. When I move somewhere I dig my heals in and stake my claim to it, adapting to everything that I like about our new surroundings. I did this when we moved to Manhattan. I enjoyed the slower pace of life, feeling like I don't have to keep up with the Joneses and just enjoying a different atmosphere.

As part of the welcoming me back, my dad and I went to our street's block party. I thought it would be good to get to know some of our neighbors and get me out of my shell I like to hide in.

Man was I in for a shock.

Shock 1: I was talking to the woman who was hosting the party and she said, "How old are you, like 30?" I very quickly corrected her with 29! Yes, I realize that I am going to be 30 this year, but I don't have to admit it and the fact that I look it to someone, was even more shocking. I hope it was the fact that my dad is getting a few grey hairs and is a grandpa. :) It's official, I'm going to be 29 for the REST OF MY LIFE!

Shock 2: The prices of housing. Not that I am oblivious to how much houses cost in the "O.C." but we don't need to go bragging about it! One of the newest neighbors on our street bought a house kitty corner from my parents. The house use to be very similar to theirs with nice red wood on the outside and big windows on the inside. (My parents' neighborhood isn't cookie cutter housing so each house is unique, but this other house was similar to ours.)
This new family bought the house and turned it into a "Tuscan/Greek" house. "It's all metal and adobe on the inside" is what she told us. Then also told us that she wanted to buy the other house kitty corner form my parents but didn't because the owner wanted $930,000 and she won't accept her $900,000 offer. The same house ended up selling 2 years later for $600,000. Did I mention that she wanted to by the two houses simultaneously?

Shock # 3 the biggest for me! The hostest and another wacky lady were talking and turned to me and asked if I read much. This lead into a conversation about them being part of a book club. I though, oh great, I need to find a new book club because I had so much fun in Manhattan. I then asked, "Do you get book club kits from the library?" I got two very confused looks from the two of them and then the replied with, "No! [you fool] We get them from Amazon!"
I must have had a shocked look on my face because they then said, "Oh, well we get them used, so their only like 6 bucks."

I do have to say I had to keep from laughing at them. What happens if you don't like the book? Or maybe their just a bunch of stuck up yuppies who all like to read the same thing and they have money coming out of their ears, so it doesn't matter if they have a few unwanted book. Who knows. Either way, I had only been back for less then 12 hours and I was slammed with a giant "WELCOME BACK TO YUPPIE VILLE, JEN WAYLAND."

Funny how I've become so use to the ways things are and the way things look that even though I am from this exact neighborhood, I found myself staring at the people thinking they looked so strange. I not trying to judge them, and maybe other people do the same thing, but it was a little bit of a culture shock for me I think. I did the same thing in Manhattan because their clothing styles haven't kept up with L.A. the same way O.C. has. I'll get use to it and in a few years, will have been assimilated.

Here's to change!

A reflection on living in Kansas

As our house becomes increasingly empty and the date of departure gets closer, I have been thinking of all the things I will and won't miss about living here.

Things I will miss:
1. Our wonderful friends! I know I'm not posting a picture of all the wonderful friends that we have, but I don't have that many pictures and frankly I kind of suck at taking pictures at parties. :}

2. Beautiful sunsets
3. An easy way of life.
4. Teaching. (would post a picture, but I don't want to hear the flack for posting a picture of my students on my blog.)
5. Getting from one end of town to the next in less then 10 minutes.
6. Lack of traffic.
7. Hobby Lobby.
8. Lovely scenery.

9. School spirit, even though I don't completely understand it.
10. Harry's restaurant.
11. Buffalo.

12. Snow.

13. Purple People. You can't really see all of them, but every football game day we would have massive groups of people wearing purple.

Things I won't miss:
1. Bugs!
2. Stupid drivers. For example: Idiots stopping on freeway on ramps. How do you expect to "merge" on a freeway going 70 mph when you've stopped! Morons.
Today I saw TWO cars driving down the WRONG side of the road. There's some construction and they were driving on the newly paved road. Don't think that there wasn't lines painted in yet, because there was. These people just were too dumb to remember that the yellow line going on your left. After all, we're not British!
3. Giant blood sucking mosquitoes!

4. Stupid college students who litter on my lawn.
5. Bugs.
6. Stupid college students who hit my truck!
7. Bugs.

8. Stupid college students who are too cheap to pay the 150 bucks for a parking ticket, and then crowd our street with their cars and make it easy for the stupid college student to hit my truck!
9. Bugs
10. The humidity! No man/woman should have to sweat this much! Especially when all you do is step outside. Not fair.
11. Bugs.
12. Getting woken up by college students practically fornicating on the side of your house and lots of drunken mayhem.
13. Bugs.
14. Lack of good restaurants. (Sad when so many people get very excited when the Olive Garden came to town.) (sorry if you're one of those people who got excited.)
15. Snow/Ice Storm

16. Tornadoes.

I'm sure I'm missing many wonderful things to list and many not so wonderful things, but every place has it's good and it's bad. I'm by no means saying that California is the best place to live. Sometimes I worry that it's the right choice because there are many things that I don't like about California. For example, the keeping up with the Joanses aspect of living in Orange County. I like driving my 10 year old pick up truck around town and feeling like I fit in, not that I drive a heap of rusting car parts. (I like my truck and it does a great job at it's job.) (Probably just cursed it! It's going to break now...)

I'm sure I'll have ample opportunities to complain about the sunshine and the beach and the perfect weather. :)

All in all, we've really enjoyed living here and our friends made it so special. Thank you to everyone that we've become friends with and that we will continue to make friends with.
